I want to make this........

and I want to do it in Civil War prints OR in 30's prints. I'd love to make it as a signature quilt.

This was something I ripped out of an American Patchwork & Quilting magazine (October 2009. It has some really odd shaped pieces in it, and while they tell you the size of the rectangles, they don't tell you what size to cut the squares to make the side and corner triangles. I guess you have to figure that part out on your own.

Wouldn't it make a great swap block? It is called Chimney Sweep, and I've tried to find directions for it on line (like at www.quilterscache.com) but I can't find it. Is there another name for this block? I apologize for the glare.

I might end up making it anyway.......... someday.

I'm probably wrong....but I remember looking at that particular issue as well. Didn't they have you use either squares or rectangles for the sides, then you just squared the block up. It sort of had the over hang thing going on. Does that make sense?

(thanks, google!)

I've been wanting to make something with this pattern, too, but it hasn't risen to the top of the list yet!

It's also called the Album block and here is a link that will show you how to make it:

I found a pattern for the chimney sweep block, and all of the dimensions were odd, I wonder if it could be reworked into something with standard strips. If there were just a math teacher out there to do some figuring.... I bet Amy make it work.

If you decide to do a signature block swap, I want to be part of it.

Hello, Nancy, I saw this article by Bonnie Hunter too and thought her method of making the block was interesting. Another name for this block is the Album block or Traditional . You can find it several places but here's a link that I found from Block Central.

I agree, it's a great block! :-) Bonnie Hunter calls it Old Kentucky Album and it's in the January issue of Quiltmaker.
You can also find the pattern at:
